Today, tiny homes come with smart layouts that prioritize multifunctionality, all kinds of modern amenities, and refined finishes, providing comfort and utility in a small package. Models like the new Harper tiny home enable a new way of living governed by freedom and intention, all the while proving that small-scale living is perfectly compatible with comfort and luxury.
The Harper is the creation of Black Clay, an Australian builder dedicated to creating “thoughtfully designed tiny homes built for people to enjoy in beautiful environments,” as the company itself puts it on its website.
A rather new name on the Australian tiny home scene, Black Clay was founded by Justin and Rachel on the Gold Coast, where a small team builds each tiny home with a focus on both craftsmanship and environmental consciousness. Justin, a licensed builder with more than two decades of experience, brings an eye for detail and quality to their creations, while Rachel complements that expertise with design insight to make sure each project blends beauty with function.
Their talent and expertise have not gone unnoticed, as the company has been shortlisted for the 2025 Tiny House Industry Australia’s “Rising Star Award,” and the Harper tiny home is a reflection of the team’s commitment to excellence.
It’s built to a standard of finish that rivals luxury dwellings many times the size and boasts a single-level layout with a spacious downstairs bedroom, which makes it ideally suited for folks who prefer to keep their living space grounded.
Built on a 4.5-ton tri-axle steel trailer, this micro-home is fully transportable and equally at ease in an urban setting or nestled deep in nature. It measures just 8 meters (26.2 feet) long and 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) wide, with 20 square meters (25 square feet) of living space, but manages to pack a wealth of features into its small footprint.
Due to its reduced dimensions and minimalist design, it would be a great vacation retret or Airbnb, but the sturdy construction and overall quality mean it would be perfectly suited for full-time living as well. Harper’s exterior is clad in a combination of Colorbond steel and Decobatten aluminum, which help to achieve a timber-like look without the extra weight and maintenance. The facade features soft curves and expansive glazing, giving the home a contemporary look.
On the inside, the walls and ceilings are finished in birch plywood, which brings warmth and texture, while underfoot, the timber oak engineered flooring adds durability. Laminex cabinetry and Caesarstone countertops in the kitchen demonstrate that high-quality finishes aren’t reserved for large homes, and handcrafted Tasmanian oak shelving and screening further elevate the design.
Large windows and the option of either bi-fold doors or French doors invite the outdoors in, making the house feel larger and more connected to the environment. And the neutral tones used throughout enhance the sense of space, light, and harmony.
Designed for open-plan living, the floor plan seamlessly connects the lounge and cooking areas in a clever way that maximizes both comfort and storage. A built-in sofa with deep storage drawers underneath offers a snug and cozy lounging area that benefits from a strategic location in front of the large entrance doors.
The kitchen is surprisingly generous for a tiny home. It spans 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) and is one of the elements that make this home so modern and comfortable. Properly equipped for daily cooking, it has a two-burner cooktop, an oven, an undercounter fridge, and an inset sink, all neatly integrated into the design.
Fully tiled and finished with top-shelf fixtures, the bathroom continues the theme of elegant simplicity. A concrete wall-hung sink anchors the space, complemented by brushed nickel tapware set against white square tiles with a plywood border. The bathroom also includes a shower with a fixed glass screen, a flush toilet, and a mirror cabinet.
At the opposite end of the house is the bedroom, which is not completely enclosed, but an oak slatted wall does provide a sense of separation and privacy. It includes a queen-sized bed, complete with storage drawers beneath for clever organization.
What turns this seemingly simple room into a sanctuary of rest and connection to the outdoors is the subtly curved wall that creates a soft, enveloping feel, and the prominent, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer unobstructed, panoramic views of the surroundings and almost delete the boundaries between the interior and exterior.
With its minimalist design, sustainable construction, high-end finishes, and the availability of full off-grid options, the Harper tiny home speaks to a growing desire to live more simply with more purpose and more respect for the environment. Black Clay offers this tiny house model for a starting price of AUD$119,000 (approx. USD$77,800).
